I would say for me AoW1 was a lot more challenging than AoW3 (maybe because I was younger too) and I believe there melee was heavily favored compared to ranged and it felt so much better have your Overlord (my favorite unit ever) instakilling a small T1 soldier than just shooting safely from distance (I found ranged heavy playstyle to be a lot stronger in AoW3 & Planetfall). Overall AoW3 is probably the best AoW game, but I played a lot more with Aow1. To my knowledge, it still has some issues, like the bone dragon doom stack that you can run into, but it is still overall a very fun game, even with a cool hot seat multiplayer mode that is painfully missing in Planetfall.Įven more than Planetfall, AOW3 isn't very balanced, but that's the fun of it. So AOW3 is basically the only game you should need if you liked Planetfall. Your economy was much more reliant on mines and external locations you needed to capture- and the AI loved to send in small, fast flying units to harass you and steal those from you every turn, so much of your time was wasted just getting your mines back every turn and chasing those flying annoyances around. First of all, there was this obnoxious "to hit chance" which meant that low tier units became completely obsolete by mid game since they just couldn't hit the higher tier units anymore.Īnd then there was mine sniping. AOW 1 and 2 (including shadow magic) had some incredibly annoying features that were luckily addressed in AOW3.
